Together with Smiling Coral Indonesia (SCI) to Realize a Coral Reef Ecosystem

Getting to Know Smiling Coral Indonesia (SCI): A Collaborative Partner of Divers Clean Action in the Seribu Islands.

Smiling Coral Indonesia was founded in 2010 by Hermansyah, fondly known as Bang Herman. Initially starting as an ecotourism service provider on Panggang Island and Pramuka Island, SCI grew into a community-based institution focusing on coastal and marine conservation, as well as local community empowerment.

Amid the rapid degradation of marine ecosystems caused by climate change and human activities, Smiling Coral Indonesia (SCI) emerges as a strategic partner of Divers Clean Action (DCA) in driving real conservation efforts in the Seribu Islands region.

๐ŸŒฑ The Beginning and Journey of SCI

๐Ÿ” Transformation During the Pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 became a turning point. In a time of uncertainty, Bang Herman, together with three colleagues under the Seribu Islands National Park (TNLKS), decided to shift SCIโ€™s direction into a more structured environmental conservation movement.

๐Ÿ๏ธ Focus Areas and Conservation Mission

SCI focuses on Pramuka Island, Panggang Island, and surrounding areasโ€”facing major challenges such as:

  • Coral reef damage

  • Marine debris

  • Coastal abrasion and tidal flooding

  • Unsustainable development

SCIโ€™s mission is to create climate-resilient tourism villages, develop sustainable fisheries, marine aquaculture, and community-based conservation ecotourism.

๐ŸŽ“ Educational & Academic Collaboration

SCI actively partners with organizations and universities, and regularly engages around 100 students annually in environmental education activities. In addition, SCI also supports scientific research and publishes journals as a contribution to knowledge and conservation policy.

๐Ÿš Real Contributions to the Ocean and Environment

SCI not only carries out campaigns but also records tangible impacts:

๐ŸŒŠ Coral reef restoration covering 5,608 mยฒ.

๐ŸŒฟ Mangrove forest rehabilitation covering 1,400 mยฒ.

๐Ÿงน Beach and ocean clean-ups, collecting up to 300 kg of

waste per dive.

๐Ÿ† Awards and Recognition

Smiling Coral Indonesia (SCI) has received several national awards, including:

๐ŸŽ–๏ธ Award from the Director General of KSDAE (2010).

๐Ÿ“Š Best BPS Award (2022).

๐Ÿ… Jakarta Tourism Award (2022) from the Governor of DKI Jakarta.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Future Hopes

Bang Herman hopes that SCI can serve as a model of an environmentally conscious community that inspires other coastal regions in Indonesia.

Smiling Coral Indonesia has proven that positive change can begin with a small community carrying a big commitment.

โ€œIf not us, then who will protect our seas?โ€ โ€“ Bang Herman, Founder of SCI.
